Stockholm, renowned as the heart of Scandinavian design and the historic home of the Vikings, often carries the charm of being the world's smallest big city. Yet, there's so much more to discover within its boundaries.
The true essence of Stockholm lies in its people, celebrated for their exquisite taste. This city has given the world iconic figures like Greta Garbo, Greta Thunberg, Avicii, Robyn, and, of course, ABBA.
But amidst the city’s meticulously preserved beauty are some truly unique hotels. One standout is Bank Hotel, a former bank transformed into a luxurious haven, blending historical grandeur with modern elegance.
The hotel located in the upscale district of Östermalm and is surrounded by landmarks such as the Royal Dramatic Theatre, was home to multiple banks (hence its name). While it has a touch of Hogwarts' Gringotts (Wizarding Bank) charm, it also boasts the flair and grandeur of Dorchester hotels across Europe, infused with a distinctive Scandinavian touch.
The building, dating back to 1910, features a restaurant aptly named after the infamous robbers, 'Bonnie & Clyde.' It successfully preserves the Renaissance details envisioned by esteemed Swedish architect Thor Thorén, while incorporating Art Deco elements and unique design features. With its grand carpet entrance and bronze double doors, the hotel reminds you that you are truly immersed in a piece of art history.
Now let's glide the stairs and step into the lobby which boasts an array of golden Owls at the grand check-in desk. We of course ask about the significance and are informed this is the symbol of the bank, but if we delve deeper into the significance of this rapture, you will find something beyond wisdom. The owl itself represents intuition, protection, and was carried by the Greek Goddess Athena for its foresight, so perhaps those lucky enough to enjoy a stay at Bank Hotel will leave a little wiser.
The design seamlessly blends modern touches with historic elegance. Aqua velvet sofas complement the vintage chandeliers and innovative design elements, creating a perfect fusion of old and new. Throughout the hotel, you’ll experience this harmonious blend, from the art d'objets adorning the halls to the vintage lift surrounded by fresh lilies. If you're fortunate, you might even stay in the Bank Director suite, as we did, where the past and future come together beautifully.
Upon entering the grand suite, the enormous windows immediately draw your attention to Bonnie & Clyde's vast dining hall below, offering a captivating, almost voyeuristic experience, all while you relax in the complete comfort and privacy of your suite.
The room is adorned with artwork from around the globe, including a stunning piece by Mary McCartney (Sir Paul McCartney's daughter) depicting Tracey Emin as Frida Kahlo. Art is at the heart of Bank Hotel, which has launched Bank Art Space, a visual sanctuary celebrating works and exhibitions ranging from Wu-Tang Clan to the brilliant works of Swedish photographers from 1952 to 2019. This unique blend of culture and luxury is a delight, offering a feast for the eyes while you indulge in opulence.
Venture down to the bathroom in your suite, or as we like to call it, the 'bathing suite.' The ambient lighting draws you into what is arguably one of the finest bathrooms we've ever seen. The vanity area is star-worthy, and the walk-in shower, paired with an Aquatica freestanding bath, allows you to completely disconnect from life's stressors.
Beyond the phenomenal features, the suite boasts a modern coffee machine and a minibar fit for royalty. The seating area is adorned with additional sculptures and objets d'art, enhancing the luxurious ambience.
The bedroom is also a perfect place for those who both wish for a peaceful slumber and need ample storage in the form of a walk-in wardrobe. Other features include a turndown service, two LCD TVs and a room service menu that will leave a few dissatisfied.
Things to do
What caught our eye was the rooftop terrace, Le Hibou. Bask in the sunshine while taking in truly panoramic views of Stockholm, sipping on a signature cocktail or, perhaps, indulging in a glass of champagne as we did. The terrace offers stunning views that provide a unique glimpse of the city's architectural design and the hotel's surroundings, including the iconic waterfront where countless sentimental memories have been celebrated.
If you venture beyond the theatre, you'll discover an array of boutiques and luxury stores, including esteemed names like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Celine, and Chanel. For a taste of Swedish fashion, don't miss the flagship Acne Studios Norrmalmstorg store, where you can immerse yourself in the true essence of ready-to-wear fashion.
With its rich history, impeccable design, and unparalleled amenities, Bank Hotel stands as a beacon of luxury and sophistication in the heart of Stockholm. From its exquisite dining options to its stunning rooftop terrace, every corner of this hotel offers an experience to remember. Whether you're drawn to its unique blend of old-world charm and modern elegance, its dedication to art and culture, or simply seeking a haven of tranquillity in the bustling city, Bank Hotel promises an unforgettable stay. So what are you waiting for? Come and immerse yourself in the epitome of luxury hospitality, where every moment is crafted to perfection.
