Ischia’s legacy runs deep. The island has long attracted philosophers, artists and those in search of healing. Unlike the theatrics of neighbouring Capri, Ischia moves to a quieter rhythm. Ancient Roman ruins, natural thermal springs and the kind of artisan culture that favours slow food and handmade tiles remind visitors of life’s finer, deliberate details. W.H. Auden once wrote that the island “corrects our injured eyes,” and that still holds true. It’s a place that reawakens the senses, restores perspective and reminds even the most worn-out city dwellers that beauty and clarity still exist, and that they’re often found where the crowds are not.
Known as the oldest colony of Magna Graecia, the island has long been revered for its healing waters and fertile landscapes. Throughout history, it has drawn poets, philosophers, artists and weary travellers in search of restoration. When W.H. Auden lived on here during the 1940s, he found solace in its quiet rhythms. Truman Capote stayed in Forio, captivated by its beauty, while Italian filmmaker Luchino Visconti made his home at Villa La Colombaia, now a museum dedicated to his life and work. Ischia exudes a quieter, deeper charm, rooted in ancient thermal traditions and volcanic energy. Its layered past, from Roman ruins and medieval towers to artisan ceramics and culture, offers moments of reflection at every turn.

Getting there
Getting there is part of the experience. You can reach Ischia via a short hydrofoil ferry from Naples, offering a smooth and scenic route across the Tyrrhenian Sea. The journey itself is a visual prelude to what awaits, with uninterrupted views of the coastline, neighbouring islands and the vast expanse of blue. We opted for the ferry over a car, a swift and comfortable choice, and watched as the city faded into the distance, replaced by the dramatic volcanic silhouette of Ischia rising from the water. It’s a route that begins the process of the mind’s yearning for slowing down.
Where to stay
Set high above the Bay of San Montano, the five-star San Montano Resort & Spa is one of Ischia’s most treasured hideaways. Tucked into the cliffs of Lacco Ameno, this luxury boutique resort enjoys a vantage point that offers cinematic views over Procida, the Bay of Naples and the pastel-coloured harbour below. What sets this property apart is not only its location but its deep connection to the island’s thermal heritage and its sense of quiet, unfussy sophistication.

Unlike the larger, louder hotels on the island, San Montano offers space without losing warmth. The staff are all from Ischia, adding a rich layer of local authenticity and knowledge that’s hard to replicate. Guests are remembered by name rather than room number, and there’s an unspoken emphasis on slow, considered living that permeates everything from the morning breakfast ritual to the golden hour piano sessions on the terrace.
A Family Affair
San Montano is family-owned, and while the hotel bears the polished hallmarks of a luxury retreat, there is a palpable sense of intimacy that’s evident from the moment you arrive. The owners’ personal touches are scattered throughout the property, from the vintage objets d’art and heirloom jewellery on display in the lobby to the Lady D cocktail named in honour of Daniela, the owner’s wife. This is a hotel with a soul, one that reflects its roots and its relationship with the island.

Design and Atmosphere
The interiors are a thoughtful mix of classic Mediterranean styling with contemporary touches. Light tones and floor-to-ceiling windows bring the outside in, framing sweeping views of the hills, volcano, sea and sky. Every detail has been chosen to highlight, rather than distract from, the setting. Decorative Vietri tiles with geometric and floral motifs line the floors, and art deco chandeliers hang from the ceilings. The walls are deliberately left white so that the eyes can focus on the view.
In the lobby, cabinets house rare Bulgari pieces, including a green and black enamel serpent, alongside an impressive wine display featuring vintage Massetino, collectable KRUG Champagne and regional gems from across Italy. There are also boutiques for guests who want to browse without leaving the grounds.

Rooms and Suites
Each room is airy and inviting, with modern technology including a Dyson hairdryer, smart TV and Bluetooth speaker. The minibar is full, with a welcome of prosecco and local delicacies to ease guests into the rhythm of the island. Spacious balconies open to spectacular views of Naples and Sorrento, and the soothing sound of birdsong accompanies each morning. Acqua di Parma toiletries elevate the in-room experience, and the kind, attentive staff make every guest feel like part of the extended San Montano family.
Select suites also come with infinity pools, perfect for an aperitif at dusk while the sun sinks over the horizon. Birds often gather to watch the same sunset, perched quietly as steam rises from the volcanic springs below. There’s a palpable reverence in these moments, shared between guests and nature.

Thermal Pools and Wellness Facilities
San Montano is home to eleven pools, ten of which are thermal. These natural waters are drawn from the island’s volcanic springs and are known to ease muscular tension, boost circulation and promote holistic wellness. Five panoramic tubs sit within the H2O complex, offering elevated views that stretch across Lacco Ameno and beyond. The layout across terraced gardens and solariums encourages wandering, lounging and soaking with intention.
The outdoor gym is ideal for guests wanting to stay active while enjoying the fresh island air, while the indoor gym on floor zero looks out toward the sea. Access to the Turkish bath, sauna and indoor fitness area does not require reservations, allowing for a spontaneous approach to wellness.

The Spa
The hotel’s spa is a sanctuary in every sense. Seed to Skin products, developed in Tuscany and known for their natural ingredients and cutting-edge science, are used throughout. These 100% non-toxic formulas are editor-approved and visibly displayed in the serene treatment areas.
Guests can purify their lungs in a dedicated chamber that uses healing technology to draw out impurities. There’s a strong focus on using Ischia’s natural resources, particularly those linked to purification and renewal. Treatments are designed to complement the local landscape and promote a deeper connection to the rhythms of the island.

One highlight is the Jet Lag Remedy Ritual, a deeply restorative full-body massage that melts away stress and encourages balance. Before the treatment, guests soak in a mineral bath with natural water to cleanse and prepare the body. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the spa space allow you to feel connected to the hills and sea while receiving treatments. It is otherworldly in the truest sense.
Dining
Dinner at La Veranda is a polished yet relaxed affair. Guests can relax in a preferred corner of the terrace or indoor dining room, both of which are designed in soothing Mediterranean tones. Mornings begin with sea view breakfasts and evenings end with candlelit dinners, or a cocktail at the sunset bar, often to the soundtrack of a live pianist softly playing everything from Frank Sinatra’s My Way to Stevie Wonder’s I Just Called to Say I Love You.

The menu at La Veranda draws from Ischian and wider Italian traditions with a focus on seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. Standout dishes include the Seared Sea Bass with tomato, capers, olives and potato; and the Tortello E Genovese – handmade pasta filled with ricotta, candied onion, mozzarella and Genovese sauce made from local beef.
A particular highlight is the cuttlefish mini burger served in a charcoal bun – a delicate, crisp bite that surprises without overwhelming. The beef tartare with beluga caviar is smooth and rich, lifted by the crunch of Swedish crispbread and a final flourish of salt, pepper and olive oil added by the waiter.

The prawn spaghetti, cooked perfectly al dente, is balanced by a lemon zest that cuts through the sweetness of the prawns. It’s vibrant, fresh and visually arresting on the plate. The steak is a hearty, tender cut, enhanced by a balsamic reduction, caramelised mushrooms and a whisper of truffle. A rosemary sprig adds colour to a dish that earns a firm 10/10.
To finish, a light Limoncello sorbet served in a glass is a cleansing, satisfying end to a meal rich in flavour and intention.
The Sunset Lounge and Signature Cocktails
At dusk, guests gather at the Sunset Lounge to watch the light change over the bay. If it gets chilly, soft alpaca blankets from Switzerland are provided, ensuring no one misses the magic of the view. Cocktails are artfully mixed with fruit picked from the property’s trees. Try the signature San Montano, made with the lemons from the on-site limoneto, or the Martini with handpicked lemon zest. The Lady D, a tribute to Daniela, adds a touch of romanticism to the menu.

Activities and Island Life
The hotel offers a complimentary shuttle to Lacco Ameno and the beach, though many guests choose to remain on the resort’s peaceful grounds. The tennis court is available for those looking to play, while nearby attractions include the charming town of Sant’Angelo, often described as a ‘mini Capri’ and just a 20-minute journey away.
Guests are encouraged to make use of all of the pools, each offering a unique temperature, vantage point and restorative experience. Wildlife frequent across the property during golden hour, and the occasional puff of smoke from the thermal springs reminds you that this land is alive beneath your feet.
