Stockholm proudly claims the title of having the most concentrated hotel scene in Sweden, with approximately 351 establishments and counting. However, amidst this vast array, only a select few stand out as independent boutique hotels, exuding a distinct charm and allure.
While our adventures have led us to countless extraordinary destinations worldwide, there is one particular lodging we were fortunate to encounter in the heart of Sweden's capital: Hotel Ruth.
As distinguished members of the WorldHotels Crafted Collection, we were privileged to embark on immersive journeys through the intimate corridors and lavish spaces of these exquisite establishments.
One such gem is Ruth, located at the corner of Surbrunnsgatan and Döbelnsgatan, nestled in the heart of Vasastan, a district renowned for its stunning parks, majestic cathedrals, and iconic statues, including a tribute to Astrid Lindgren, the beloved author of the Pippi Longstocking adventures.
Hotel Ruth, owned by the Pettersson family—who also manage the sister hotel Frantz—effortlessly combines exquisite interior design with local charm in a classic Stockholm building, enhanced by a unique fairytale twist. The name, chosen as a female counterpart to Hotel Frantz (named after Master Tailor Frantz Bock), stands for Rebel, Unique, Tailored and Humbled. This reflects the Petterssons' desire to be bold and rebellious in the hospitality industry, breaking rules and standards while offering a unique experience to every guest who enters its doors.
The family-run boutique hotel exudes character and offers unpretentious luxury, making it the ideal choice for families and those seeking a home-away-from-home experience, enriched with unique personal touches. Ruth is truly a family affair, it is operated by sisters Tea and Ellen, and guests can enjoy breakfast prepared by their mother and often see their father assisting with hotel operations. The attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable staff also make saying goodbye at check-out especially difficult.
The masterminds behind the interiors are architects and interior designers Jonathan Söderblom and Nina Kullberg of Hippo-Ray, recently nominated for the Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Award for their work at Ruth. This talented duo is also responsible for the stunning visuals at Hotel Kung Carl, Chez Jolie, and Night Club Köket.
At night, a quirky illuminated "R" projects stunning light onto the pavement, welcoming guests with a distinctive touch. Upon entering the beautiful doors, guests are welcomed into a stunning social ground floor, featuring a lounge adorned with artwork and sculptures by Swedish artist Julius Nordvinter, along with board games for nostalgic moments with friends and family. The lobby and check-in desk catch the eye, offering Bordeaux-colored vintage-style room keys. Adjacent to the desk is a bar and a charming restaurant. The design is quirky and fun, with unique art pieces, sculptures, and even prints of Swedish monarchs. The vibe blends elements of Art Deco, Bauhaus, and 1960s aesthetics, creating a harmonious fusion that feels like stepping into an Edward Hopper painting.
The rooms are spacious and feature high beds and Victorian roll-top baths, complemented by rustic wooden floors in the bedrooms and high-polished veneered tiles in the bathrooms. Not only are they generously sized, but if you struggle with sleep, a night at Ruth will leave you rested and revitalised. For added convenience, a QR code allows guests to easily explore the hotel's features and services and interact with the staff to meet their needs.
Indulge in relaxation by unwinding in the lounge with a truly bespoke cocktail experience. Each concoction on the menu is crafted with passion and draws inspiration from the rich cultural experiences and diverse heritage of head barman and mixologist, Marcelo.
For those seeking a palate-challenging adventure, we highly recommend the Chilcano—a tantalising blend of Peruvian liquor harmoniously balanced by lavender and ginger beer to cleanse the palate. This complex cocktail, featuring Amargo Chuncho (a special Peruvian bitter), lime, and Pisco Peruano, showcases Marcelo's ingenuity in creating something truly exceptional—reflecting the unique essence represented by the "U" in Ruth's acronym. Other delightful selections to explore include the invigorating Ruth's Ruby—a delightful gin and elderflower infusion, ideal for savouring during the summer months. Alternatively, if you're inclined, Marcelo will craft a personalised cocktail tailored to reflect your true personality, elevating the moment to something truly extraordinary.
A stay at Ruth isn't merely an experience—it's an immersion into a meticulously curated world where personalised interactions and cherished moments ensure an unforgettable stay brimming with cherished memories.
